The new Roto-Grip Rogue Cell is the latest in the Cell Line from Roto-Grip.
Based on the drilling instruction included with the ball, I went with the 5×3, 2″ buffer. This was touted as the Layout Everybody Needs. The pin is 5″ from my PAP, the MB is 3″ from the PAP and the Pin is 2″ off the VAL.
While shooting our video, I was highly impressed with the overall reaction of this bowling ball. Keeping in mind that I am only a 180-190 average bowler, it took very few takes to shoot good video with this bowling ball.
There was another bowler that looked at the ball and was very curious about the coverstock. The Hybrid coverstock is a very nice blend of a solid and a pearlized cover. This gave the ball great length and power to grip it and rip it back to the pocket.
What a great bowling ball. Great job Roto-Grip.
John, when are we going to get to see the video??? I'm dying to see this bad boy!!!
Soon my friend. Soon. Been a busy week at work

I was able to get a pre-release Rogue Cell from my local pro shop. The pro shop drilled it using the dual-angle method (I don't know what the angles were). I found my PAP to be 4 1/2" right on the mid-line. The pin, cg, and mass bias all ended up in similar positions to your ball John. This is where I get confused. My ball ended up needing a weight hole. It was put in a spot almost straight right of my fingers (it might be above my pap on the val, but not sure, didn't ask), which I thought was odd, as I normally see them on the pap or below it. I assume the specs of our balls were different, as I just don't understand this whole weight-hole thing (my ball has a 2.5-3" pin and 2.68oz. of top weight). I understand why they are needed (USBC rules, no more than 1oz. of side weight), but I don't understand how two layouts can look so similar, yet be so different. Maybe this is topic that you guys can hit up on Talk Bowling sometime soon? From the basic; why they are needed, to the more complex; how it is determined that they are needed, and how the placement affects ball reaction.

John who makes your guy's thumb slugs? They are very cool.
Hi Vince,
We make them ourselves using a Thumb Mold. Checkout TalkBowling for a description.
Hammer has released the new [bowlingball value="6936"/] as a successor to their popular [bowlingball value="6724"/]. Watch the following video to see the ball reactions of Tony Ruocco, Brian Halstrom, and myself.
Roto-Grip is about to release the next version of their Cell brand of bowling ball – The Rogue Cell. The Cell and Cell Pearl have been wildly popular in the bowling leagues around me. I can’t wait for this newest edition to hit the lanes on March 12, 2009.
As usual, we will try to get video and reviews written as soon as possible.
Today, TalkBowling episode #12 was released. This episode is mostly geared towards new bowlers that aren’t sure of the difference between conventional and fingertip grips. We are very excited to be doing this and really appreciate all the support that we have received.

I wasn’t sure what to expect out of this bowling ball since I have never seen a 900 Global bowling ball in action before. I decided to drill the [bowlingball value="6912"/] up aggressively with the pin 3 3/8″ from my PAP, just off to the right of my ring finger. I positioned the Mass Bias about two inched right of my grip’s centerline.
I must admit I was very impressed with the [bowlingball value="6912"/]. As of right now it is the go to bowling ball in my arsenal. It makes a very strong hook in the backend. This ball needs a little oil to get down the lane, but when it does it is well worth it.

I must admit that when I first got the [bowlingball value="6912"/] bowling ball, I was a little skepticle. 900 Global is a relatively new manufacturer that didn’t want to deal with Internet companies such as bowlingball.com in the beginning, so we had not tried any of their equipment. Wow, I am happy that they have changed their mind. The [bowlingball value="6912"/] is one of my favorite bowling balls in my arsenal right now.

Finally! Thanks John. I am a stroker like you are and am looking for a heavier oil ball that will be a little forgiving if I miss my mark. I had been debating between the Virtual Gravity and the Original Cell until I seen this was coming out. I am assuming that it being a hybrid coverstock I will still get more reaction than a pearl but won't have to put it away as soon a solid. Is that correct?

Great analysis of the ball. I was extremely impressed by the versatility of this ball. It doesn't hook quite as much as the Virtual Gravity, but it definitely gets down the lane and hooks great.
I really like the hybrid coverstock. I was a little timid at first, not quite knowing what to expect. But the ball rolled phenomenally.
I am not envious of the decision ahead of you. Between the Virtual Gravity and the Rogue Cell, I don't know if I could choose. The VG just feels so right in my hand, and hooks a ton. But the Rogue Cell was very impressive my first few games out. We didn't shoot anywhere near the same amount of footage to put this video together. It just struck very well for us. We actually ended up with a ton of great footage, it was hard to pick what to include.

I think I remember hearing you had to polish up the VG to get it to roll right for you, did you have to do anything to the cover of the Rogue Cell?
John Congdon 9:42 pm on February 27, 2009 Permalink |
Nope, I didn't polish the Virtual Gravity, Brian polished his up. I threw both ball with the Out of Box (OOB) finish.
